Welcome
For our fourth annual conference, we depart from our usual format of
comparative psychoanalytic perspectives on a clinical case as we engage in a
rich dialogue with distinguished researchers and clinicians to explore models of
neurocognitive subprocesses, i.e. the implicit and explicit domains, in the
context of relational experience. Clarification of each mental model will yield
implications for thinking about the development of a sense of self and its
relationship to consciousness. Importantly, the ways in which these memory
systems are integrated inform theories about therapeutic change with respect to
the processes of interpretation and relational experience. From a
neuroscientific perspective that combines a range of disciplines, Dr. Allan
Schore will focus on the significance of the developing right brain and the
necessity of self-with-other experience for mature functioning of the “implicit
self.” Dr. Wilma Bucci, cognitive psychologist and researcher, will explicate
her model of the human organism as a multi-code emotional processor and the way
in which integration of these processes relate to the emergence of the sense of
self and a theory of therapeutic action. From a psychoanalytic perspective, Dr.
James Fosshage, integrating research and clinical findings pertaining to the
implicit and explicit domains of learning and memory, will focus on implications
for theories of development and therapeutic change processes. To enrich this
dialogue Dr. Steven Knoblauch will present a case that highlights the implicit
interactional aspects of his finely nuanced analytic work. The panel and the
audience will have ample time for further exchange.
There will be a membership meeting on Friday, October 1rd from 6:30 PM to
7:30 PM at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies Training Institute,
250 West 57th Street, 5th Floor, Conference Room. Members will be brought up to
date on AAPI's activities and plans for the future. We invite your
participation.
We look forward to seeing you in New York City for this lively and
stimulating conference.
