December 4, 2003
Dear AAPI Members:
I want to introduce myself as your new President of AAPI, and to share some
of my goals for the organization. At the October, 2003 Board Meeting held in
New York, there was lengthy discussion concerning the considerable need for
more communication within the Association, and the minutes of that meeting
being distributed now establish a number of ways in which Board Members
advocated such an expanse of contact. All of these ideas are currently being
pursued. In particular, we have appointed a Listserve Committee which is
currently working to increase communication needs across our community, not
only between the Board and Institute Representatives, but also among
individual members. This networking system will be established through various
listserve sites, and our goal is to have this in full operation by April 2004.
Also our new Program Committee is planning a stellar conference for the 2004
year.
Among the ideas for enhanced communication detailed in the Board Minutes, I
would in particular like to see our Association extending educational
opportunities across the country, in addition to the Annual Conference,
through smaller regional programs, which would further a mutually supportive
network between our National Institute Members and our local Individual
Members. In addition, I hope to work closely with Jim Fosshage to create an
arena for writing, presenting, and publishing that extends across both
theoretical and national borders. I want to make AAPI an agent for a more
pluralistic psychoanalytic milieu.
I want to support a strong effort to increase memberships to AAPI,
memberships that are of central importance to our growing strength as an
institution. I would also like to support efforts being made to expand the
number of our Institute Members.
There’s much to be done, and I would very much like to be in contact with
each of you as to your ideas, interests, and values for this organization.
Sincerely,
Estelle Shane, President
