Why Join AAPI?
The Vision of AAPI
Many highly reputed “autonomous” psychoanalytic institutes have been
established in the United States, Canada and abroad. “Autonomous” refers to
those institutes that, for political, theoretical and managerial reasons, have
chosen not to apply for membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association
or to the International Psychoanalytic Association. Today, these autonomous
institutes train a large share of psychoanalysts nationally and
internationally.
In keeping with its vision and purpose AAPI was established to form an
associational network for autonomous psychoanalytic institutes and individual
members. AAPI offers an alternative to the American and International
Psychoanalytic Associations.
AAPI aims not to dictate policy, but to protect the treasured autonomy of
these Institutes. AAPI was not established and is not controlled by
psychoanalysts of only one mental health discipline, but by psychoanalysts
representing all the mental health disciplines. AAPI does not elevate
psychoanalysts of one mental health discipline above others, but treats
psychoanalysts of all the mental health disciplines respectfully and equally.
AAPI does not control the appointment of supervisors and training analysts,
but protects the autonomy of each Institute and its selection of supervisors
and training analysts. AAPI does not try to promulgate a particular theory,
but in keeping with today’s philosophical times of relativistic science and
hermeneutics supports the development and comparative exploration of all
psychoanalytic theories.
